Amsterdam Museum

As artistic director of the Amsterdam Museum since 2019, Schavemaker is currently responsible for the museum’s collection and programming, with a focus on co-creation, working with artists, and decolonizing the museum. As such, she co-initiated discouraging the term “Golden Age” as a synonym for the 17th century. The polyvocal exhibition The Golden Coach (June 18, 2021 – February 27, 2022) and its accompanying publication (WBooks) continued to stir the debate on how to deal with contested heritage. During the pandemic, Schavemaker co-curated the online exhibition Corona in the City (www.coronainthecity.nl), a project involving more than 40 partners and over 3,000 individual contributions.

Professor at UvA

Since 2018, Schavemaker has acted as professor of Media and Art in Museum Practice, part of the Media Studies department at the University of Amsterdam. In this role she supervises PhD students, teaches, and conducts research into critical museum practices and new forms of collecting and co-creation. In September 2019 she gave her inaugural professorial address “Many-Colored stories: Media and art in museum practice,” for which she invited Imara Limon, Jörgen Tjon A Fong, and Massih Hutak to deliver their own contributions as part of her lecture (thereby contesting the ruling academic policy for this official address).

Stedelijk Museum

Between 2009 and 2019, Schavemaker oversaw various departments within the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. She initiated the museum’s public program and curated exhibitions such as ZERO: Let Us Explore the Stars (2015), Jean Tinguely: Machine Spectacle (2016), Pinball Wizard: The Work and Life of Jacqueline de Jong (2019), and the experimental collection presentation Stedelijk BASE (in collaboration with Beatrix Ruf and AMO/Rem Koolhaas and Federico Martelli, 2017–2022). 

Publications 

Schavemaker has published extensively on modern and contemporary art, theory, and curatorial practices. She was founding editor of several magazines: Simulacrum (University of Amsterdam), Stedelijk Studies and the Amsterdam Museum Journal. Recently the reader The Future of the Dutch Colonial Past. Curating Heritage, Art and Activism, co-edited by Schavemaker, appeared at Amsterdam University Press. 

Public programs 

As long-time advocate of bringing academia and the museum closer together, Schavemaker has curated many public programs and scholarly conferences since the 1990s, such as the acclaimed lecture series “Right about Now: Art and Theory since the 1990s” (2006–2007), “Now is the Time: Art and Theory in the 21st Century” (2008–2009) and “Facing Forward: Art and Theory from a Future Perspective” (2011–2012). More recently she is transitioning towards more inclusive and participatory forms of programming, such as the project “Give Us the Museum”, a collaboration with writer Arnon Grunberg and seventeen newcomer artists. In her essay “Changing the Game,” Schavemaker (self-)critically reflects on the significance and future of this type of programming.

Schavemaker is an alumnus of the Getty Leadership Institute (2018) and was a Visiting Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) from 2013 to 2014. In 2016 she held the Reinwardt Memorial Lecture, which resulted in the publication The White Cube as Lieu de Mémoire: The Future of History in the Contemporary Art Museum (2017). Schavemaker has acted as an advisor for various funding organizations and supervisory boards. Since 2019, Schavemaker is a regular presenter on Nu te zien! (AVROTROS), in which museum directors visit and review other museums and exhibitions.

Amsterdam Museum

Sinds 2019 is Schavemaker als artistiek directeur van het Amsterdam Museum verantwoordelijk voor het inhoudelijk programma van het museum met een focus op co-creatie, het werken met kunstenaars en het dekoloniseren van het museum. In deze hoedanigheid was zij medeverantwoordelijk voor het besluit van het museum om de term ‘Gouden Eeuw’ niet meer te gebruiken als synoniem voor de 17e eeuw. De meerstemmige tentoonstelling De Gouden Koets (18 juni 2021 – 27 februari 2022) en de begeleidende publicatie (WBooks) leverde een bijdrage aan het maatschappelijke debat over hoe om te gaan met beladen erfgoed. Daarnaast was Schavemaker mede-initiator van de online tentoonstelling Corona in de Stad (www.coronaindestad.nl), een project met meer dan 40 partners en ruim 3.000 individuele bijdragen.

Hoogleraar UvA

Sinds 2018 is Schavemaker hoogleraar Media en Kunst in de Museale Praktijk aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam bij de afdeling Media Studies. Vanuit deze rol begeleidt zij promovendi, geeft college en doet onderzoek naar kritische museum praktijken en experimentele vormen van verzamelen en co-creatie. In september 2019 hield zij haar oratie ‘Gekleurde verhalen: Media en kunst in de museale praktijk’ waarvoor ze Imara Limon, Jörgen Tjon A Fong en Massih Hutak uitnodigde om een eigen bijdrage te leveren (waarmee gebroken werd met de geldende academische regels voor deze officiële lezing).

Stedelijke Museum

Van 2009 -2019 stuurde Schavemaker verschillende afdelingen aan binnen het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Ze lanceerde het publieksprogramma van het museum en cureerde tentoonstellingen als ‘ZERO: Let Us Explore the Stars’ (2015), ‘Jean Tinguely: Machine Spektakel’ (2016), ‘Pinball Wizard: Het werk en leven van Jacqueline de Jong’ (2019) en de experimentele collectie presentatie 'Stedelijk BASE' (in samenwerking met Beatrix Ruf en AMO/Rem Koolhaas en Federico Martelli) (2017-2022). 

Publicaties 

Schavemaker heeft uitgebreid gepubliceerd over moderne en hedendaagse kunst, theorie en de museale praktijk. Ze is oprichter van verschillende tijdschriften: het tijdschrift Simulacrum (Universiteit van Amsterdam), Stedelijk Studies (Stedelijk Museum) en het Amsterdam Museum Journal. Recent verscheen de academische reader The Future of the Dutch Colonial Past. Curating Heritage, Art and Activism (Amsterdam University Press, januari 2024) die zij mede-samenstelde.

Als voorstander van het dichter bij elkaar brengen van de academische wereld en het museum, organiseerde Schavemaker sinds de jaren 1990 vele publieksprogramma’s en wetenschappelijke conferenties, zoals de toonaangevende lezingenreeksen ‘Right about Now: Art and Theory since the 1990s’ (2006–2007), ‘Now is the Time: Art and Theory in the 21st Century’ (2008–2009) en ‘Facing Forward: Art and Theory from a Future Perspective’ (2011–2012).
